Dr. Amy Arias is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology with additional training and expertise in gastrointestinal pathology.

Training and career

Dr. Arias earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Southern Nazarene University and a medical degree from the University of Oklahoma. She completed residency training at Baylor Scott and White hospital, where she served as chief resident. In 2006, she joined KMB Service Corporation which included coverage of Advocate hospitals in Illinois. In 2009, she became a partner in the group. During this time, she became interested in hospital leadership and served on multiple committees including credentialing, peer review, and executive. She is especially proud of her time as chairman of the peer review committee at Advocate BroMenn hospital. In 2011, she decided to continue her training in a gastrointestinal pathology fellowship with Dr. Patrick Dean at Poplar Healthcare in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Arias went on to join the group and served as director of multiple laboratories. In 2022, Dr. Arias joined SaraPath Diagnostics where she has continued to focus predominantly on GI pathology.

Why pathology

Dr. Arias entered medical school with the intention of pursuing a career in pathology. She was first exposed to the discipline while working as a phlebotomist during college. Her mentor, Dr. Schlesinger, taught her that pathology is the "foundation in the house of medicine."

Outside the lab

In her free time Dr. Arias enjoys traveling and studying other cultures. Some of her favorite trips have included camping on the Serengeti in Tanzania, spending time with the Maasai tribe, hunting with the Hadza tribe, and horseback riding across Mongolia.
